We got this for Thanksgiving this year and used it to fry one of the best turkeys we've ever had. It's even rated highly by Consumer Reports, which no one can say about gas turkey fryers. And it is even certified by UL, as the others aren't. This fryer has many other uses that just frying turkey.

We've used it to steam lobsters, clams and crablegs as well. It fries up to and 14 lb turkey. Initially we thought this was a "con" for the electric fryer since we sometimes host a bigger Thanksgiving than a 14 lb turkey will feed, but then we discovered that it wasn't recommended to fry anything over 15 lbs anyway since it then gets to a point that it would require too long of a cooking time for a juicy turkey.

I love the taste of deep fried turkey and Thanksgiving wouldn't be right without a fried turkey on the table. But, I live in Maine and November is usually not warm and often stormy. And let's face it, deep frying anything with propane is labor intensive as you have to babysit the burner to keep the temperature in the proper range. Well now there is a safe and easy alternative to propane burners: the Turk 'N' Surf Electric Turkey Fryer. You can deep fry on the kitchen counter!!! The double-walled unit keeps the outside (lid excluded) warm but not hot to the touch and the see-through lid lets you view the progress of the cooking process. I cooked a 13 pound turkey for Easter and it was the equal of anything I have cooked in a propane setup.

One suggestion however: There is a Maximum Fill line in the removable pot and if you are cooking a bird between 11 and 14 pounds, place the bird breast down in the basket, or the top of the breast will not be submerged and thus will not brown. This isn't simply a fryer however. It is thermostatically controlled with a wide range between 150 and 400 degrees. So you can steam clams, lobster or a whole lot of corn. The instruction gives a recipe (its only recipe) for low country boil, but practioners of this will certainly improve upon this. What I really like is that, as someone living above the Mason/Dixon Line, I can enjoy this until now, uniquely Southern cooking genre. My Turk 'N' Surf sat on the counter between the stove and the sink and performed wonderfully. It has six rubber 'feet' that elevate well above a counter surface, so scorching won't be a problem. And like almost all deep fryers, there is a safety break-away plug. Do you get the feeling that I like the Turk 'N' Surf? Culinary-speaking, it is the answer to a prayer. No more shivering in the high 20's in November, and a safe and simple way to make the most delicious turkey that you've ever imagined.

The user manual breaks down cooking times for many items from fries, to a turkey breast to hot wings or a turkey. The great thing about the electric vs. the gas is that you can cook indoors. With gas, it takes about 4 times as long and you have to cook outdoors FAR away from any buildings and it is highly recommended that you stay with it at all times. Who wants to sit out in the cold for 4 hours watching a turkey cook? The drain on the side is a wonderful added feature that you shouldn't have to live without. It is set just high enough to drain most of your oil, but leave any settlement in the bottom for easy cleaning. (This is really handy and one of the big tips to frying turkey is continued use of the oil for a few times as it's gets better when "seasoned".)

The adjustable thermostat (with safety shut-off) eliminates the need to monitor temperature, which can be somewhat difficult with the gas fryer. The glass lid with a "cool-touch" handle allows you to monitor your food easily. Other features include: Six legs to make it even more stable. An outer shield to protect against the heat generated from the frying. A maximum fill line for oil, to minimize spatters, spills, and fires. A 'ready'cook light. A lifting hook and the basket has a drain clip for easier draining. And it comes apart for easy cleaning.
